Our Progress!
1.27.15
1.28.15
Today removed all the weeds and excess spinach to start anew. Because spinach gives us many food options, we decided to keep one. We currently have about 1/8 meter of spinach left. We are thinking about growing some lettuce, basil, carrots, potatoes, strawberries, and onions.
1.29.15We tilled the soil a little bit to make the surface smoother and less compact. Doing so allows the seeds to be planted with ease. When the seeds begin to sprout, the buds can emerge from the soil easily through soft, less compact soil. We planted lettuce, carrots, and mint today. We placed the mint in the middle, the lettuce on the side, and carrots on the edges.
2.11.15We bought a baby lettuce plant and planted it in the ground since our lettuce seeds were not sprouting. It looks as though it is dying, but we made sure to water it before leaving alone. We are sure that it is just the plant adjusting to its new environment. The lettuce covers about 1/9 square meters of our plot. There are a few weeds, but we pulled them out.
2.28.15Our basil is growing well and and the lettuce is alive and slowly growing again. A new mint plant has sprouted, so now we have two full mints. We just have to wait for the lettuce to grow in abundance so we can add it in our meals every week. The lettuce takes up approximately 1/16 square meters of our plot, but we wish for it to be around 1/8 square meters.
5.7.15We are adding green onions to our garden plot. Our progress on the growth of our plants is looking pretty good. The lettuce is still growing but, has provided us with enough food for two weeks. It now covers about 1/16 square meters of our garden plot. The onions will serve as another plant to add to our diversity, and help to flavor our foods every week!

2.10.15We added a stepping stone to our Garden so that crossing it would be much easier, as people would not step on our plants. The recently planted mint has grown to about 1/9 of our plot. There are a few weeds in the garden, but we pulled them out. Carrots are growing around the edges. We can't wait to harvest! We are planting a few more lettuce plants since the old seeds did not grow. Lettuce would be a big part of our garden as it gives us many food options.
2.27.15We added basil to our plot so that we can have a more diverse garden. We found that making food with just lettuce and mint was difficult. So instead of planting basil seeds, we decided to buy baby basil plants and we planted it in the ground, digging a hole in the ground big enough for its roots and stem, and we packed it in firmly, watering it with enough water. We hope this basil will grow successfully, as we hope to make it one of our main crops. The basil covers about 1/4 square meters of our plot.
4.2.15We have added basil to our garden lot, another main plant that is essential in many of our meals. The mint seems to be growing in excess, but we can utilize the mint to flavor many of our meals. The lettuce plants are growing on the left side of our plot, covering about 1/13 square meters. The mint covers about 1/4 square meters of our plot, whereas the basil covers about 1/16 square meters.
6.2.15This is our end result of our garden! We have one full basil plant that has provided us with meals for 1 month, as we picked them in small amounts. We have three full mint plants, 2 full lettuce plants, about 6 carrots, 2 green onions, and 1 full Kale plant. We are happy to say that our garden has been very successful!

Our Main Plants
CarrotsOur carrots were one of the most successful plants to grow in our garden as they grew from the seeds we planted in the beginning of our mission. Although they took awhile to grow, we harvested them toward the end and used them in our smoothies and salads. Carrots are a great addition to a sustainable garden as they do not take up much area, are easy to grow, and can be added to different types of meals!
LettuceAlthough our lettuce seeds never grew, we bought baby lettuce plants and planted them in the ground. They grew in abundance and provided us with enough to make one meal every two to three weeks. In the beginning, we only planted on lettuce plant, but another one sprouted, possibly because the lettuce seeds had dispersed from the first one. Lettuce is a great choice for a community garden, as it grows in abundance and is quite easy to grow!
BasilWe decided to grow basil because it can be used in many of our dishes, and it grows back pretty fast when we harvest it. Our basil seeds never grew, so we bought a baby basil plant so that we could have a basil plant right off the bat. As the weeks passed, the basil plant grew in abundance, and covered up 1/3 of our garden plot. The basil plant is a great addition to a sustainable garden, because there is no need to use chemical fertilizers or pesticides for it to grow back as fast as it does. Basil can be used in many meals such as pesto, salads, pizza, smoothies, etc.
